The Max Cameron Theatre, now in its third year of operation, is a state-of-the-art performing arts facility in Powell River, British Columbia. Located on the campus of Brooks Secondary School, the 400-seat Max Cameron Theatre was commissioned by School District #47 as part of an expansion to the school that also included a digital media center, an acoustically engineered choral room, a film and video recording studio, and a dance and drama studio.
The Max Cameron Theatre is a flexible performance facility designed for use in many different configurations for both school and community user groups. The theatre was built with the intention of providing a student-friendly facility to enhance and support the instrumental, choral, dance, drama, film and video programs in the school. In addition to frequent use by the school and district, the Max Cameron Theatre is also utilized significantly by the community. It has become a first class performance facility for the Powell River Academy of Music, the Powell River Festival of the Performing Arts, International Choral Kathaumixw, the Powell River Ministerial Association, Far Off Broadway Theatre Company, The Powell River Film Society, Banff Mountain Film Festival as well as many other community groups and functions. The Experience Entertainment Performance Series and the Cineplex Odeon HDTV live broadcasts of the Metropolitan Opera have proved to be a significant addition to the high quality arts performances in the community. The popular ‘Live at the Met’ broadcasts at the Max Cameron Theatre continue to bring music lovers together and have made world-class opera accessible to the people of Powell River.
After an experimental first season of live performances that enlightened us on the preferences and interests of our audiences, we have chosen the performance groups for our second season based on last year’s response. With our Experience Entertainment Performance Series for 2009/2010, we have included a wide range of performers and groups that encompass the strong community connections to music and dance, as well as the town’s rich aboriginal history.
